Missionaries and the Christian Frontier of the Early Rus’: Bruno of Querfurt and his World

The objective of my fellowship research at the HAB is to advance my work on Bruno of Querfurt and missionaries in the early Rus’. The project’s aim is to examine the manner in which missionary narratives were constructed and reflected in medieval manuscripts. The project will investigate five key areas: the assessment of the sources, methods and agendas of narratives on the missions and missionaries in the early Rus’; the dating and transmission of these Latin narratives; missionaries at work; the comparison of Latin and Byzantine missions; and the harmony of the resulting picture with archaeological evidence. The missionary narratives gathered by Bruno of Querfurt in his works provide insight into the formation of Christian myths on the periphery of Europe. At the HAB, I undertake a comparative analysis of Bruno of Querfurt’s works.
