Since mid-August, Beldan Sezen has been working on her project on voluntary and involuntary isolation in a studio at the Federal Academy for Cultural Education. She is creating an artist's book based on her concept of "Solitary Confinement" - the transformation of the flat book into a cubic space.
"How free are our thoughts when the body is isolated from its surroundings? How long can the mind feed on the positive memories of a free life? Is a retreat, an isolation, necessary to protect the soul, even if only temporarily?" In her search for answers, Beldan Sezen draws on the writings of Anton Wilhelm Amo, who came to the court of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in the early 18th century as a child and is considered the first European philosopher of African descent.
In the course of the award ceremony, the artist will present her work with a performance in the Augusteerhalle. After the event, it will be exhibited in the museum of the Bibliotheca Augusta until 3 October. For her project of a walk-in book, Sezen not only received 6,000 euros but was also offered the opportunity to work at the library and create an artist's book inspired by the HAB's holdings.
Beldan Sezen, born in Wiesbaden in 1967, lives and works in New York and Amsterdam. Her works of art can be admired in numerous renowned museums in the USA, the Netherlands and Germany. The HAB already has two of her works in its collection: “Wetrocities” (Malerbücher 69.FM 6) and “To keep that bit of physical distance” (Malerbücher 69.2° 5).
