Enrico Noris and Ancient Christian Heresies in Early Modern Historiography.
My project examines the development of historical scholarship on ancient Christian heresies in the late seventeenth century, with a particular focus on the work and circle of the Augustinian theologian Enrico Noris (1631-1704). In particular, it highlights how this scholarship was mobilised in controversial theological debates, how it proved instrumental in shaping early modern religious identities, and how it developed a new conceptualisation of and methodology for ecclesiastical history which proved influential in the Enlightenment and beyond. At the HAB, I am working predominantly with Noris’ key texts as well as those of formative influences and opponents such as Christian Lupus, Cornelius Jansen, Jean Garnier, Jean Hardouin, and Antoine Pagi.
