Adaptations of IT and information science open up new paths to knowledge for the humanities as a whole, while also helping to establish new approaches to research and supplying new methods for processing and evaluating sources, documents, data and media. A combination of technical innovations and humanities research questions forms the basis for establishing the current state of digital humanities (DH).

Published by the Marbach-Weimar-Wolfenbüttel (MWW) Research Association together with the organisation Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum (Digital Humanities in the German-Speaking World, DHd), the ZfdG introduces a forum for presenting and discussing DH research results. The open-access journal places special emphasis on contributions that take cultural tradition as represented by the abundant and unique holdings of the participating libraries and archives as their point of departure for research.
